Texas-based Artist Thomas Actively Pursues Identity in the Age of the Image
Austin, Texas, August 31, 2006 — Volitant Gallery proudly presents Terri Thomas’s first Texas solo exhibition entitled “U-Genics”. Revealing to viewers the complicated social dynamics of femininity in an era of image saturation, “U-Genics” promotes discovery of our multifaceted identities, the anxieties and influences that play and prey upon us. The exhibiton’s title derives from the concept of the proposed improvement of the human species through scientific and medical manipulation. “As a society, we are enthralled with facsimiles, illusions and notions of “Beauty” and the “Double”, says Thomas, “so much so, that we prefer the image to the object, appearance to substance, fantasy to reality, form to content, and copies to their original.”
