Expressions of the Spine

Expressions of the Spine began as exploration of alignment – how inner states of trauma, revolt, hope, or rest resonate with the outer world. Vertical lines emerged as cries of resistance, horizontals as gestures of release, unfolding through shifting materials: jute, bark, animal hide, light. What emerged while painting a triptych were three archetypal snake-like forms, later recognized as echoes of Ayurvedic Doshas, Vata, Pitta, Kapha. These constitutions/identities would later become the basis for main characters in a story. Other expressions of the spine use emanating light, inspired from Japanese Shoji screens, extending the spine into glowing, architectural presence. Neither fixed nor categorical, the series charts the spine as both structure and symbol: a site where identity, energy, and the natural world converge.
