Co-Emergence I began this series by asking a playful question: What would it look like if a Cy Twombly, a Cecily Brown, and a Rothko had a baby? Then, I let go. The canvases are approached primally, through staccato gestures and raw brush marks. Layers of complementary colors build both tension and harmony. Before the surface fully sets, I cut back with solvent, erasing and revealing. Some marks remain unfinished, others evolve into figuration. Once dry, the work is rotated and attacked again – each orientation becomes another chance for surprise. Atmospheres emerge as my deliberation recedes – trying to get my brain and tendencies out of the way. The final passages arrive in translucent layers. Wet paint is carved and scraped to expose its history, the glazing deepens its vibrancy, until the surface holds immediacy, memory, and its unfolding. |
